Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political organization—the “America Party”—with a mission to “give Americans back your freedom” and disrupt what he calls the entrenched two-party system in Washington.
The move follows a high-profile falling out with Donald Trump, once an ally, over Trump’s recently passed “megabill”—a sweeping and controversial domestic policy package that Musk has strongly criticized.
Musk made the announcement via a post on X (formerly Twitter), referencing a poll he conducted showing a 2-to-1 public demand for a new political party. “You want a new political party, and you shall have it!” he wrote.
Although no candidates or districts have been officially named, Musk said the America Party will target 2 to 3 Senate races and 8 to 10 House races in 2026. His goal: to form a powerful swing bloc in Congress capable of influencing major legislation and ensuring it reflects the “true will of the people.”
He also noted the party would caucus independently while engaging in legislative negotiations with both Republicans and Democrats. However, as of Saturday, the party had not yet filed with the Federal Election Commission.
Musk’s break from Trump marks a significant shift in their relationship. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO previously led Trump’s now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) but stepped down in May at the end of his term as a special government employee. Their relationship soured over Trump’s aggressive legislative spending.
“The insane spending in this bill shows we’re living in a one-party country—the PORKY PIG PARTY!!” Musk posted earlier this week. “It’s time for a political party that actually cares about the people.”
While details around the America Party’s organizational structure, funding, and legal standing are still uncertain, Musk’s potential influence in tight congressional races is expected to draw serious attention. In 2024 alone, he donated over $280 million, primarily to Trump’s campaign and several Republican candidates.
With the 2026 campaign season approaching, both parties are likely to watch Musk’s next steps closely.
